Investigating at the same time as other organisations

Sometimes the concerns we are investigating about a nurse or midwife’s practice can overlap with investigations being carried out by other organisations. Examples of this are investigations by the police, coroners, employers, NHS bodies, regulators of other healthcare professions, or regulators of healthcare systems.

For the purpose of this guidance, an investigation by another organisation includes any proceedings which may follow that investigation, such as a criminal prosecution or a disciplinary hearing.

This guidance only applies to investigations by other organisations that are currently taking place and which could mean our investigation needs to be put on hold. We will not usually put our own investigation on hold where there is only the future potential for an investigation by another organisation. However, we will liaise with the other organisation if there is any doubt.
