Vanessa Smith

Chief Nursing Officer at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the National Mental Health and Learning Disability Nurse Directors’ Forum since June 2025.

Vanessa has worked at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for over 30 years, beginning her career there as a student nurse. She has worked in a range of clinical and operational leadership roles and was appointed Chief Nursing Officer in April 2021.  

Vanessa is also Executive Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Allied Health Professionals and Social Workers. She has supported teams to improve patient safety, experience and involvement, and strengthen quality governance and assurance. 

Vanessa has chaired the National Mental Health and Learning Disability Nurse Directors’ Forum since June 2025.
