Claire Birchall

Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Integrated Governance at Public Health Wales.

Claire has over 35 years’ experience in healthcare, including specialist and senior nursing, leadership, general management and director roles across three major Health Boards. Before joining Public Health Wales in 2023, she led the Wales Cancer Network and was Professional Lead Nurse for the NHS Collaborative.  

Claire is focused on prevention, health promotion and early intervention, and on achieving long-term improvements in people’s health and wellbeing. She recently completed a six-month secondment with the Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, leading population health initiatives and developing the Quality Statement for Infection Prevention and Control in Wales.  

Claire is dedicated to supportive and compassionate leadership and is an advocate for equity and justice. She is also a trained coach and is passionate about person-centred care, outcomes and experience.
