Professor Aly Hulme

Senior Healthcare Consultant and Visiting Professor of Patient Safety and Leadership at the University of Cumbria



Aly is currently appointed as an Interim Director of Maternity Services. She is a registered nurse and midwife with extensive Board-level experience across the NHS, Defence, the independent sector and higher education, covering provider and commissioning organisations.  

Aly has over 25 years’ experience in patient safety, human factors, quality improvement and governance. She is an accredited Root Cause Analysis trainer and investigator, and her doctorate explored serious incident investigation practices within the NHS and the conditions required to learn and improve. She also holds an LLM in Healthcare Law and an MSc in Healthcare Policy.  

Aly has led national programmes to advance patient safety, including work to develop capability and culture, implement the first national reporting and learning system, and establish the first Patient Safety Collaborative within an Academic Health Science Network. She recently contributed to the development of the NHS National Patient Safety Syllabus and previously served as Health Education England’s National Clinical Advisor for Patient Safety and Quality.  

Aly also served for 37 years in the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and holding senior leadership roles in healthcare education, governance and patient safety.
