What Nicole did
During the placement, Nicole observed how registered nurses coordinated care, prioritised workload and worked collaboratively with Billy’s family, carers and the wider multidisciplinary team.
She developed an understanding of the different roles and responsibilities within the community children’s nursing service, including nurses, support workers, therapists, medical staff and family carers. Nicole recognised that effective teamwork depended on clear communication, mutual respect and shared goals.
Under supervision, Nicole contributed to team discussions, shared relevant observations and responded to feedback from her practice supervisor and other colleagues.
Nicole also observed how leadership in nursing can be demonstrated through calm decision-making, advocacy, organisation, professional role modelling and supporting others to deliver safe and compassionate care.
What this demonstrated
5.1 Understand the principles of effective leadership, management, group and organisational dynamics and culture and apply these to team working and decision-making
Nicole observed how registered nurses coordinated care and supported collaborative decision-making within the team. She recognised that leadership includes creating a positive culture focused on safe and effective care.
5.2 Understand and apply the principles of human factors, environmental factors and strength-based approaches when working in teams
Nicole recognised how workload, communication, home environment and available support could influence care delivery. She also valued the strengths and expertise of family members and professionals involved in Billy’s care.
5.4 Demonstrate an understanding of the roles, responsibilities and scope of practice of all members of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and how to make best use of the contributions of others involved in providing care
Nicole developed insight into the different roles within the multidisciplinary team and how they contributed to Billy’s wellbeing. She recognised that coordinated care relies on shared expertise.
5.5 Safely and effectively lead and manage the nursing care of a group of people, demonstrating appropriate prioritisation, delegation and assignment of care responsibilities to others involved in providing care
Nicole observed how registered nurses prioritised visits, responded to changing needs and organised care safely. She began to understand how delegation and prioritisation support effective service delivery.
5.6 Exhibit leadership potential by demonstrating an ability to guide, support and motivate individuals and interact confidently with other members of the care team
Nicole demonstrated growing confidence when contributing to discussions and engaging with colleagues. She responded positively to guidance and showed willingness to learn within the team environment.
5.7 Demonstrate the ability to monitor and evaluate the quality of care delivered by others in the team and lay carers
Nicole reviewed care delivery, listened to family feedback and monitored whether support arrangements remained effective. She recognised the importance of evaluating care quality in partnership with others.
5.8 Support and supervise students in the delivery of nursing care, promoting reflection and providing constructive feedback, and evaluating and documenting their performance
Nicole experienced supportive supervision from her practice supervisors and recognised the value of reflection and feedback in learning. This helped her understand how students are supported in practice settings.
5.9 Demonstrate the ability to challenge and provide constructive feedback about care delivered by others in the team, and support them to identify and agree individual learning needs
Nicole observed how concerns could be raised professionally and constructively when standards of care delivery needed improvement. She recognised that feedback is an important part of maintaining safe care.
5.10 Contribute to supervision and team reflection activities to promote improvements in practice and services
Nicole took part in reflective conversations with her practice supervisor about learning experiences and care delivery. She recognised that reflection supports continuous improvement.
5.11 Effectively and responsibly use a range of digital technologies to access, input, share and apply information and data within teams and between agencies
Nicole used electronic records and digital communication systems to support continuity of care. She recognised the importance of accurate and secure information sharing.
5.12 Understand the mechanisms that can be used to influence organisational change and public policy, demonstrating the development of political awareness and skills
