Richard Cartland
Acting Executive Director of Professional Regulation
Richard Cartland is the Acting Executive Director of Professional Regulation, overseeing our transformational fitness to practise (FtP) plan as well as leading the directorate responsible for maintaining the register of more than 841,000 nurses, midwives, and nursing associates eligible to practise in the UK. He has previously supported improvements to the NMC’s Fitness to Practise work and brings a long track record of running complex operations and delivering large-scale change.
Richard has spent much of his career leading major programmes across the technology and media sectors, working with organisations including Sky, Virgin Media, BT and the BBC.
He is known for his practical, delivery-focused approach, combining strategic leadership with a strong understanding of how services operate day to day. Richard places particular emphasis on building capable teams and making sure change translates into real, measurable improvement for the organisation and the people it serves.
