NMC to survey 841,000 professionals on the register

Published on 24 March 2025

We’re sending a survey to over 841,000 nursing and midwifery professionals on our register to better understand their experiences of delivering care. We also want to hear their views about the NMC and the work we do.

This will be an annual survey which covers topics including:

  • professionals’ experiences at work over the last year
  • any barriers professionals identify to good standards of care
  • next career steps
  • how well professionals think the NMC is performing as a regulator.

The results of the survey will influence our regulatory work, and we will share findings with others in our sector who influence the varied environments in which nurses, midwives and nursing associates work. We will track trends over time, how professionals’ experiences impact people’s care, and how nursing and midwifery varies across different settings and the four countries of the UK.

Hearing from the public

Our work is also informed by the experiences of people who use health and care services. That’s why we’re also conducting an annual survey of members of the public later this year – so we can learn from contemporary experiences of treatment and care.

Emma Westcott, NMC Acting Executive Director of Strategy and Insight, said:

"It’s vital that the NMC roots its work in the experiences of people who provide and receive nursing and midwifery care. As the independent regulator of more than 841,000 nurses, midwives and nursing associates, we’re uniquely placed to hear from professionals across the UK."

“Our survey will provide invaluable insight, and we strongly encourage everyone on our register to make their voices heard. This will help us to strengthen the evidence base for how we regulate and inform our work with others who shape the context for health and care delivery."

Further information

  • We’ll email the survey to registered nurses, midwives and nursing associates between 25 March and 2 April 2025. The survey closes on 17 April 2025.
  • Professionals will receive a survey link unique to them. People can only respond using their unique link which they should not forward to anyone else.
  • We won’t include professionals who have previously told us they don’t want to be contacted about research or those who have already received a pilot version of the survey.
  • Professionals who have not received their unique link by 3 April should email research@nmc-uk.org with their name and PIN. Please don’t contact us about this until 3 April.
  • We’ll make efforts to ensure we have responses from a diverse range of professionals considering people’s roles, protected characteristics and the four nations of the UK.
