NMC seeks two new Council members as we improve the way we regulate
Published on 22 May 2025
The NMC is seeking two new members to join its Council from October 2025 – one registrant and one lay person, who will both play a key role in helping us to become a better regulator.
The Council is the governing body of the NMC. It sets the strategic direction, takes key decisions, and holds the Executive to account. It is made up of 12 members: six lay people and six professionals on our register, all appointed by the Privy Council.
We are looking for a registered nurse, midwife or nursing associate with senior level experience in leading or managing culture change and/or organisational development.
We are also seeking an individual who has never been on our register, with performance management related experience, who can chair our Finance and Resources Committee.
The successful candidates will replace Claire Johnston and Sue Whelan Tracy when their terms end on 30 September 2025.
We want the Council to reflect our society in all its diversity and be attuned to the communities we serve and the professionals we regulate. We are particularly keen to hear from people with the right skills and expertise from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds.
Both roles are open to applicants from across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Ron Barclay-Smith, Chair of the Council, said:
“This is a pivotal time for the NMC, as we work to earn back trust and confidence in our ability to protect the public through the effective regulation of nurses, midwives and nursing associates.
“We are looking for two new Council members to support us as we move through the recovery phase of our new corporate plan, focusing our efforts on the effective delivery of our core regulatory functions.
“You will be joining a Council united in our commitment to improve how we protect the public and our own performance. We look forward to hearing from those with the qualities and commitment we need to help us become a better regulator.”
