NMC seeks initial views on the future of the Code and revalidation
Published on 11 September 2025
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched a survey giving professionals, students, employers and the public the opportunity to have their say on the future of the Code and revalidation
We are reviewing the Code and revalidation to ensure that they reflect the evolving health and social care landscape, and new and emerging challenges in practice. The new survey is designed to gather people’s initial views to help guide our research and engagement over the coming months.
We want to hear perspectives on:
- How the Code could be improved through new or strengthened standards, guidance or supporting information
- How we could improve the current model of revalidation, including ensuring it supports professionals to deliver the best possible care, is robust and is accessible for everyone on the register - whatever their role and background.
We will email the survey to all the professionals on the register, and share with other groups through our communication channels. We expect to launch a formal consultation from September 2026, subject to approval by our governing Council.
We anticipate publishing the new Code and revalidation process in October 2027.
Professor Donna O’Boyle MBE, NMC Acting Executive Director of Professional Practice, said:
“The Code and revalidation are fundamental to nursing and midwifery practice in all settings across the UK. Now is the time for people to share their views on how these pillars of effective regulation should evolve."
“Most people’s lives are touched by nursing and midwifery, so there is no limit to who can have their say. That’s why we’re calling on as many people as possible to complete our survey, and share it far and wide.”
