NMC responds to Skills for Care’s State of Adult Social Care report 2025
Published on 16 October 2025
Skills for Care have published their annual review of the adult social care sector and workforce in England.
Commenting on the report, Donna O’Boyle, Acting Executive Director of Professional Practice at the NMC, said:
“I welcome Skills for Care’s latest comprehensive assessment of the adult social care workforce in England. Social care nursing is a lifeline for people and communities, so it’s positive to see the number of registered nurses in social care rising for a second consecutive year. However, the persistently high turnover rate shows there’s still much more to do to ensure professionals are valued, supported and able to stay in the sector.
“It’s key that the Government’s forthcoming workforce plan recognises the vital contribution of social care nurses and nursing associates in delivering safe, high-quality care. A sustainable pipeline of professionals is essential to meet the needs of an ageing population and to support the ongoing shift towards care in community settings.
“We also need to attract and inspire the next generation to choose a career in social care nursing. That begins with education – ensuring students have access to high-quality, supportive placements where they can develop their skills and experience the life-changing impact of social care nursing first-hand.”
