The Code

Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates

Updated version of the Code

We published an updated version of the Code on 10 October 2018. The updated version is substantially similar to the 2015 version, but now reflects our new responsibilities for the regulation of nursing associates.

The Code coverThe Code (Y Cod - Cymraeg) presents the professional standards that nurses, midwives and nursing associates must uphold in order to be registered to practise in the UK.

It is structured around four themes – prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust.

Developed in collaboration with many who care about good nursing and midwifery, the Code can be used by nurses, midwives and nursing associates as a way of reinforcing their professionalism. Failure to comply with the Code may bring their fitness to practise into question.

  • Publication date: 29 January 2015
  • Effective from 31 March 2015
  • Updated to reflect the regulation of nursing associates: 10 October 2018
