Current position and background

Margaret McGuire holds dual registration as both a midwife and a nurse. She was most recently Executive Nurse Director, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, retiring in March 2022. In this role, Margaret was accountable for the professional leadership of around 16,000 registered nurses and midwives as well as other health professionals serving a population of 1.14 million local people.

Prior to that, Margaret was Executive Nurse Director, NHS Tayside, having previously served as Deputy and Acting Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland, and as Midwifery Development Officer for the Scottish Executive/Royal College of Midwives, she was the national lead for developing midwifery practice.

Margaret previously worked as a Midwifery Lecturer and has a keen interest in all aspects of nursing and midwifery and multi-professional education. She holds an honorary Chair from the University of West of Scotland and is Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Glasgow.

In March 2023, Margaret was awarded an Honorary OBE for services to the National Health Service.
