Code and revalidation survey set to close with more than 13,500 responses

Published on 22 December 2025

The public, professionals, employers and students have until 31 December to share their views on where the Code and revalidation could be strengthened – with more than 13,500 people having had their say already.

Respondents to the survey so far are calling for a greater focus on digital technologies, anti-racism and staff wellbeing.

The Code and revalidation reviews are part of a roadmap for improving education and standards, with plans to publish:

  • Outcomes of a practice learning review in autumn 2026
  • A new Code and Revalidation process in autumn 2027, and
  • Standards for Advanced Practitioners by March 2028.

In June, the NMC launched new Principles for Advanced Practice – which for the first time sets out the regulator’s expectations for nurses and midwives working at an advanced level.

This year the NMC has also:

Donna O’Boyle, Acting Executive Director of Professional Practice, said:

“This year has seen substantial progress in our work to modernise professional standards – making sure they keep pace with contemporary practice, and better support nursing and midwifery students and practitioners throughout their education and careers.

“We want as many people as possible to share their initial views on our Code and revalidation process before the survey closes. These early insights will be vital in helping us ensure these standards reflect the realities of modern nursing and midwifery practice.”
