Standards for pre-registration midwifery education

Pre-registration midwifery education

At the Council meeting on 25 January, the Council approved proposed changes to our programme standards. The current standards are still in effect, but we will be working with Approved Education Institutions to implement the new changes to their programmes.

Find PDF versions of the updated standards here. We’re now working to design the standards in an accessible format and translate them into Welsh before officially launching them in the coming weeks.

Standards for pre-registration midwifery education publication coverWe review and maintain standards for midwifery education and practice.

The Standards for pre-registration midwifery education must be met by all midwifery students on our approved programmes before registration. This ensures midwives are fit to practise at the point of registration.

They were published in February 2009 and replace the Standards of proficiency for pre-registration midwifery education published in 2004. The revised title reflects the scope of the standards and guidance for pre-registration midwifery education.

This edition includes European directives, along with our standards and guidance that relate to the outcome of two consultations: Fitness for practice at the point of registration, and Pre-registration midwifery education. We’ve also included the essential skills clusters for midwifery education.

Circulars

NMC Circular 07/2011

We’ve withdrawn our circular about changes to midwives’ exemptions (07/2011). While it’s not our role to publish these, we know it’s important for midwives and student midwives to be able to access this information. In light of this, we’ve edited our Practising as a midwife in the UK publication to include an overview of midwives’ exemptions and links to where you can find the most up-to-date information. Please see pages 5 and 13 for the relevant information.
