NMC responds to latest announcement on national maternity investigation

Published on 17 September 2025

The rapid national investigation will look into maternity and neonatal services at 14 NHS trusts – with a focus on understanding the experiences of affected women, families and babies, identifying lessons learned and driving improvements for high-quality, safe maternity and neonatal care across England.

Responding to the announcement, Paul Rees MBE, Chief Executive and Registrar at the NMC, said:

"We welcome the announcement of the 14 NHS Trusts that will be the focus of the rapid national maternity investigation across England.

"It is reassuring that Baroness Amos' team will speak directly to women and families, whose voices must be at the heart of this work, and that there will be particular attention on tackling health inequalities. Their courage in sharing often devastating experiences will help drive the improvements that are so urgently needed.

“Every woman, baby and family has the right to safe, effective and compassionate care. We look forward to working with Baroness Amos and system partners to learn from this investigation and to help ensure safe and effective care becomes the norm everywhere.”
