NMC responds to CQC national maternity survey 2024
Published on 28 November 2024
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today (28 November 2024) published its latest national maternity survey.
The findings show improvements in mental health support for pregnant women and new mothers, but more could be done to ensure people receive the positive maternity experiences they have the right to expect.
Commenting on the survey, Tracey MacCormack, Assistant Director for Midwifery at the NMC, said:
“We welcome the findings from today’s survey – it’s particularly reassuring that more women are experiencing mental health support throughout their pregnancy journeys. This is a vital part of maternity care, encouraging midwives to think holistically and reflect people’s views and preferences in everything they do.
“That’s why our Code and standards highlight the importance of, and support midwives to deliver, mental health care. It’s essential that these midwives have the right knowledge and skills to identify women’s individual needs, and can work in partnership with them to deliver the safe, effective, person-centred midwifery experience they have the right to receive.
“It’s wonderful to hear how women reported feeling listened to, informed and had experienced good communication from their midwifery teams. However, it’s disappointing that this was not the experience for so many others. It’s clear that more must be done to ensure a consistent and positive experience for everyone, especially those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and with long-term mental health conditions.
“Our campaign, The best midwifery care happens in partnership, highlights how listening to and working with the women in their care helps midwives to build a relationship based on trust and confidence. We know that so many midwives strive to do this every day and we will continue to support them as they work to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of women, babies and families everywhere.”
