NMC condemns appalling anti-Jewish attack
Published on 30 April 2026
The NMC has condemned the attack on two Jewish people in Golders Green, London yesterday – the latest in a series of appalling anti-Jewish hate incidents.
There is no justification for such violence. Our thoughts are with those affected, their families, and the wider Jewish community.
Discrimination, hate crime and violence continue to rear their heads in our society, and we all have a responsibility to challenge and eradicate them.
Everyone – regardless of their background or beliefs – deserves to feel safe, respected and able to live their lives free from fear.
It is deeply concerning that Jewish people going about their daily lives face the risk of being physically abused simply for who they are. It should never be unsafe to be visibly Jewish.
This is against any form of human decency.
As the regulator, we take racism incredibly seriously. In May, we will publish new anti-racism principles for nursing and midwifery education and practice – to embed anti-racism, bias awareness and cultural curiosity, safety and respect.
Paul Rees MBE, Chief Executive and Registrar, said:
“Anti-Jewish hate has no place in our society. The reality that Jewish people in the UK face abuse simply for being visibly Jewish is unacceptable and deeply disturbing.
“This is unacceptable, and demands a clear and united response.
“As their regulator, we implore nursing and midwifery professionals to be active allies to Jewish people – to speak up, to challenge discrimination, and to help create environments where everyone feels safe, respected and able to live openly without fear.
“This is fundamental to the values of our professions and to the care we provide every day.
“We also recognise and thank those health and care professionals, including emergency responders from Hatzola, who treated the victims at the scene yesterday, who continue to provide care and support to those affected.
“There is no place for hatred in our communities. We all have a role to play in standing against it.”
