Today we celebrate more than 778,000 nurses on our register. Safe, effective and kind nursing care is vital to people’s health and wellbeing every day across the UK.
Nursing is one of the country’s most trusted professions, and we welcome today’s news that the government will protect the title of ‘nurse’ in legislation so that nobody who is not on our register can abuse that trust.
Following the launch of our Culture Transformation Plan in March, on this International Nurses Day, we also reaffirm our pledge to be the best possible regulator – we owe it to the professionals on our register to deliver meaningful change.
Paul Rees MBE, Interim Chief Executive and Registrar, said:
“Thank you to all those nurses who deliver great care every day. Whether you're working in hospitals, communities, education or research, your expertise and skills are critical to the health and wellbeing of the nation.
“In my short time at the NMC, I’ve had the privilege of meeting nurses across different settings and seeing your impact firsthand. These experiences have been deeply inspiring, and they reinforce why we must do more to support you and your profession.
“With our Culture Transformation Plan underway, we’re committed to delivering faster, fairer and more effective regulation.
“This year, we’ll also start the process reviewing the Code and revalidation to ensure our standards and guidance reflect the realities of modern practice. We’re proud to be your regulator, and we’re determined to be the regulator you deserve.”
To mark the day, we are spotlighting the voices of nurses, reflecting on what their work means to them.
