Healthcare assistants (HCAs) are not currently regulated in the UK. If a patient or member of the public has a complaint about a healthcare assistant, they should raise their concerns with the organisation that the healthcare assistant works for. |
Is your concern something we can investigate?
We take every concern raised with us seriously. However we can only consider concerns that suggest there is an ongoing risk to public safety, public confidence or professional standards that could require us to take regulatory action and intervene in a professional’s practice.
We can usually only investigate concerns about:
- abuse of professional position, for example an improper sexual relationship with a patient or service user
- discrimination against patients, colleagues or others
- serious or repeated mistakes in patient care
- serious criminal offences
- violence
- dishonesty or fraud
Some of the things we don't investigate include:
- minor clinical errors
- neighbour disputes
- contractual disputes
- rudeness
- civil proceedings
What we can't do
- make a nurse, midwife or nursing associate apologise to you
- fine a nurse, midwife or nursing associate
- provide an explanation of your care
- change the outcome of a local investigation
- investigate general concerns about a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s place of work.
