We can only investigate concerns about a nurse, midwife or nursing associate where there is an ongoing risk to public safety, public confidence or professional standards if that professional continues to practise without restrictions.

We understand that if you’re thinking about raising a concern with us, you have been and perhaps still are going through a difficult time.

We want to make sure every nurse, midwife and nursing associate provides safe care. One of the ways we do this is by acting when someone tells us information that suggests there is an ongoing risk to public safety, public confidence or professional standards that could require us to take regulatory action.

Around 90% of the concerns raised with us by members of the public are closed at the screening stage, as we aren't the right organisation to investigate the concern, or the concern does not suggest an ongoing risk to public safety, public confidence or professional standards.

When we consider a concern, it goes through a formal legal process which we aim to conclude within 15 months.

For that reason, we strongly recommend reading the information on these pages, which outlines what you need to consider before raising a concern, and using our eligibility checker to help you decide if we're the right organisation to act on your concern.
