Birte Harlev-Lam OBE.jpgHaving held senior positions such as Director of Midwifery for Women’s Services in both London and Cambridge, Birte has demonstrated her adeptness in overseeing large-scale operations and ensuring the delivery of quality care. Her regional leadership as the Maternity Lead for Midlands and East, with strategic oversight of 42 maternity services, shows her commitment to enhancing quality and safety standards within healthcare systems.

At the national level, Birte has made significant contributions as the first Head of Maternity and Children’s Services in NHS England and as the National Clinical Director for Maternity and Children in NHS Improvement. In these roles, she championed the cause of safe, high-quality midwifery and children’s care, supporting healthcare providers in consistently meeting rigorous standards.

In 2019, Birte was appointed to the role of Executive Director Midwife at the RCM (Royal College of Midwives), where she led the professional agenda locally, nationally, and internationally on behalf of the organisation. Her leadership spanned across key pillars including research, education, practice, and leadership development. She retired end February 2025.

Recognised for her outstanding contributions, Birte was honoured with an OBE for her services to Maternity and Children’s Care in 2020, a testament to her dedication and impact in the field. She remains deeply committed to advancing leadership and quality improvement initiatives, across the UK.

Birte serves as a trustee for the charity Petals, reflecting her commitment to supporting women and families who suffer pregnancy loss.
