What does the application process involve?

Our international registration process is split into key stages.

  • Completing an initial eligibility and qualification application.
  • Taking the test of competence.
  • Completing the registration application, which involves demonstrating that you meet our health and character requirements and that you have the necessary knowledge of English.

You can also contact our international registration team directly for more tailored support at overseas.enquiries@nmc-uk.org.

What evidence will I need to provide?

We will ask you to provide information throughout your application process. We do this so that we can confirm that you are eligible to join our register and to make sure that you have the right skills, knowledge and training to practise safely and effectively in the UK.

Qualification and registration information

We will ask you to provide information as part of the eligibility and assessment application.

  • Evidence of your identity, such as a copy of your passport.
  • A copy of your original qualification certificate with an official translation if it is not in English. Your name, the name of the qualification and the date the qualification was awarded must be clearly visible.
  • Contact details of the education institution that awarded your qualification, including the name, address and email.
  • Contact details of the regulator in your country of training. For some countries where there is no regulator, this may the institution where you gained your qualification, or the Ministry of Health.
  • If previously registered, a copy of your registration certificate.

We will need your permission to contact your regulator to verify your registration or that your qualification would allow you to register with them as a nurse or midwife. If you have not been registered before, then we will also need to contact your education provider to verify that your qualification would lead to registration.

Once we have all the information we need from you, we will evaluate your application and let you know the outcome within 14 days.

Other information required

When completing your registration application, we will ask you for:

  • evidence that you meet our health requirements
  • evidence that you meet our character requirements
  • evidence that you meet our English language requirements
  • confirmation that you have, or will have, an appropriate indemnity arrangement when you come to practise in the UK. Find out more information about professional indemnity and why it is needed in our online information.

Once you’ve completed each of these stages, we will need your permission to contact your referees to verify the information provided.

Then we will make a decision on your application. We aim to assess applications within 30 days and will email you to let you know the outcome.
