Responding to the report of the Independent Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Review, Andrea Sutcliffe CBE, Chief Executive and Registrar at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), said:
“This is a truly harrowing report. My heart goes out to the thousands of women and their families who have experienced unimaginable pain and suffering as a consequence of these medical treatments, while their concerns were ignored for so long.
“As the publication of these findings makes clear, it’s now the responsibility of all parts of the health and care system to come together to ensure real openness and learning brings about positive change. I’m glad to see steps to achieve this laid out in the review.
“We will carefully consider the full report and its recommendations. We’re committed to playing our part in helping everyone who receives midwifery and nursing care across all four countries of the UK to experience the best and safest care they deserve.”
