Responding to the Department for Health and Social Care announcement on an annual payment for student nurses, Andrea Sutcliffe CBE, Chief Executive and Registrar for the NMC, said:

“This investment in the future of nursing and midwifery is very welcome. We know there are real challenges with existing workforce shortages across the health and care system and potential for these to increase, given the evidence of an ageing workforce from our latest registration dataset.

“As we approach the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife in 2020 it is good to see the commitment to attracting talented people into these fantastic professions. We need to make sure that recruitment and retention of these valued professionals remain a high priority so we have the numbers of nurses and midwives we need to provide the care we all want – safe, effective and kind.”
