NMC condemns attack on Manchester synagogue

Published on 02 October 2025

We have been shocked and dismayed by the attack today at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester.

Discrimination, hate crime and violence continue to rear their heads, and we all have a responsibility to proactively eradicate this. Everyone – regardless of their background or characteristics – deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued in their workplace and community.

At this time of a rising tide of antisemitism and intolerance in the UK, many nursing and midwifery professionals are experiencing unacceptable discrimination, both within the health and care services where they work and in wider society.

We also thank the emergency services who responded swiftly at the scene, and the health and care professionals who are now treating those injured. Their dedication and professionalism deserve our respect and thanks.

NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, Paul Rees MBE, said:

“I am appalled by the attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester today, especially on Yom Kippur.

“The NMC stands firmly against antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. In this era of rising community tensions, it is more important than ever that we treat one another with dignity, kindness and respect – including our nursing and midwifery professionals who work tirelessly to care for others.

“All of our colleagues, professionals and members of the public should be treated with dignity and compassion, regardless of faith, background, or identity. There is no place for any form of hatred in health and care – or anywhere in society.”
