International Day of the Midwife 2025

Today, on International Day of the Midwife, we celebrate the 45,198 midwives on our register working across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

To mark this important occasion, we have produced a new video, featuring midwives speaking about what their important work means to them:

This year’s theme, Critical in Every Crisis, highlights the importance of good and safe midwifery care for women and babies through some of life’s most significant, and sometimes challenging, moments.

We are also reiterating our commitment to be the best possible regulator – one that delivers faster, fairer and more effective regulation for professionals and the public we are here to serve.

Paul Rees MBE, Interim Chief Executive and Registrar at the NMC, said:

“Midwifery care is vital for women and babies during some of life’s most significant moments – sometimes in challenging environments. Today, we celebrate the positive impact so many midwives have on individuals and communities.

“We owe it to everyone who receives midwifery care and to all the midwives on our register to be the best regulator we can be. We’re working at pace to build a positive, empowering and inclusive culture for everyone at the NMC, so that we can support midwives more effectively.

“We also recognise the need to modernise our professional standards. This year, we are beginning work to review the Code and revalidation guidance to ensure our standards truly support your practice and reflect the realities you face.

“On behalf of the NMC, I want to say ‘thank you’ for the profound difference you make to families and communities across the four nations.”
