Lesley Maslen appointed NMC Executive Director of professional Regulation

Lesley Maslen has been appointed as the new Executive Director of Professional Regulation at the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Lesley joins the NMC from the Financial Ombudsman Service, where she has been the Lead Ombudsman and Director of Casework since 2017. In this role, she has been responsible for handling and resolving disputes between financial businesses and their customers. She was previously Head of Customer Services at Which, and Director of Digital Customer Experience at Catalyst Housing.

In her new role at the NMC, Lesley will lead the directorate responsible for regulatory decisions about people joining, or on, our register. This includes maintaining the register of nurses, midwives and nursing associates eligible to practise, and looking at concerns raised with us about people on the register.

Lesley Maslen said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the NMC as Executive Director of Professional Regulation. It is so important that we are a progressive regulator, inspiring professional and public trust and confidence in our work. This is a challenging time for the nursing and midwifery professions, and I look forward to working with colleagues and partners to ensure we are upholding standards of safe, effective and kind practice.”

Andrea Sutcliffe, NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, said:

“Lesley will bring a wealth of casework management and leadership experience to bear in her new role here at the NMC. This will be especially valuable at a time when we’re prioritising the reduction of our fitness to practise caseload, and working with the government to improve the legislation that guides our regulatory work.

“Lesley’s extensive customer service experience will also be invaluable, because to regulate well, we need to support our professions and the public. This helps us strike the right balance between promoting excellent practice and investigating rare cases of poor practice. It also makes sure people can join our register quickly and safely, and it ensures that the people we work with are at the heart of everything we do.

“I’m very much looking forward to welcoming Lesley into the NMC team.”
