Statement from NMC Chair on recent Council member recruitment
Published on 15 May 2020
Philip Graf, Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, addresses the most recent recruitment drive for applicants to join our Council from October 2020.
Philip Graf, Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) said:
“Following a recent recruitment drive seeking nursing and midwifery applicants to join our Council from October, we were unable to appoint a registered midwife.
“I recognise this has generated some concern and I very much regret that we were not successful in appointing a midwife in this round of recruitment. However, there are other opportunities and I am determined that through discussion and review with Council next week, we will agree a way forwards as quickly as possible.
“I believe it is essential that as a Council we continue to hear and understand the voice of midwifery – as we already do throughout our wider organisation via the collaborative work of our Midwifery Panel and thanks to the work of our senior midwifery advisers.
“I always want the specific perspective of midwifery to be understood and valued. I also recognise the expertise and value a midwife brings to the Council’s vital governance and oversight responsibilities.
“I have been in contact with the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) during this recruitment process and I recognise and understand the concerns it has raised. I will continue to work closely with the RCM and other senior midwifery leaders and I look forward to providing a further update on our recruitment position shortly”
