We need to make sure nurses, midwives and nursing associates have the skills, knowledge, health and character to be able to care for people safely.

We do this in line with the standards of health and character set out in our Code.

We’ve produced additional guidance on health and character to explain:

  • when you need to tell us about any relevant health conditions and character issues (such as police charges, cautions, convictions or conditional discharges)
  • how we assess and consider health and character declarations.

Making a health or character declaration

We ask people to complete a number of declarations in relation to their health and character in any registration application (including readmission and revalidation). This helps us to decide whether they meet our requirements.

Read our guidance on health and character to find out what you need to declare and when you need to do this.

How we consider health and character declarations

We’ll consider each application on a case-by-case basis, taking into account all relevant circumstances and information.

We may ask you for more information to help us make a decision.

Read our guidance on health and character to find out more about how we assess health and character as part of registration applications.
