Standards for adaptation to midwifery in the UK

Overseas midwifery programmes

Since October 2014 all nurses and midwives applying to join our register, who trained outside the EU/EEA, are required to take a test of competence (ToC) as part of the application process. There are separate tests for nursing and midwifery. For more information see our pages on Trained outside the EU/EEA.

The Overseas midwives programme: Standards for adaptation to midwifery in the UK were published in 2007. The title of this publication was changed in December 2009 from Standards for adaptation to midwifery programmes.

This standard is for approved programme providers, local supervising authorities, local supervising authority midwifery officers, employers of midwives, registered midwives and midwives applying to join the register who trained outside the UK/EU.
