NMC response to Queen’s speech 2017
21 June 2017
Jackie Smith , NMC Chief Executive and Registrar said:
“I am pleased that the Government has committed to bringing forward legislation that will give clear independence to the Health Service Safety Investigations Branch (HSSIB). We are committed to working with HSSIB and the Department of Health to deliver a healthcare system that can learn from its mistakes, to the benefit of both the public and healthcare professionals.
“I am however deeply disappointed that despite a commitment to regulatory reform in the Conservative Party manifesto, a Bill modernising the regulation of nurses and midwives has not been included in the Queen’s Speech. I have said for several years now that our current legislation is hopelessly out of date, inefficient and costly. In its current state it does not serve the public or the professions well.
“We will continue to drive out what efficiencies we can within the constraints and limitations of our out of date legislation while continuing to press the Government for the much needed changes that will enable us to better serve the professions and protect the public.”
