NMC responds to midwifery supervision report

Published on 26 January 2016

The NMC has responded to a report by the Department of Health focusing on midwifery supervision

Jackie Smith, NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, said:

"We welcome the publication of this report by the Department of Health as this is something we have been pressing for.

"There is no doubt that access to good clinical supervision is essential for all healthcare professionals. However it is for employers, not regulators, to take responsibility for this important function. We will continue to work with the Department of Health to support the successful transition of midwifery supervision.

"The NMC regulates two distinct professions and we recognise that we need to consult and engage with midwives and other stakeholders about matters that affect them."
