If a nurse or midwife is subject to fitness to practise proceedings, they can apply to be removed from the register by way of voluntary removal (VR).1 This will conclude the proceedings without the need for a full hearing. VR supports our aim to 'reach the outcome that best protects the public at the earliest opportunity'.

The VR process also applies if a nurse or midwife who is not subject to fitness to practise proceedings tells us about a potential regulatory concern when they apply to be removed from the register by VR.

Rule 14(1) and (2A) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (Education, Registration and Registration Appeals) Rules 2004 (‘the Registration Rules’).
