Engaging with politicians

We are accountable to Parliament through the Privy Council and appear regularly before the House of Commons Health Committee in a public hearing.

We engage with politicians about our work in protecting the public so that political debate and public policy can be fully informed by what we do. We follow developments in parliament to make sure that we are aware of any changes that have the potential to impact on us.

Our key public affairs priority at present is seeking changes to our legislation. We published a position statement in October 2014 which sets out the key areas of legislative change that we urgently need in order to become a more modern and effective regulator.

We were deeply disappointed that a Bill modernising the regulation of nurses and midwives was not included in the Queen’s Speech in May 2015. We are calling on the government to bring forward these changes to our legislation as soon as possible.
