Legislative change

Our position

The NMC’s legislation is complex and prescriptive, meaning it is slow to change in the fast-paced healthcare environment we operate in. We call on all political parties to commit to urgent and substantial change of the overarching regulation of the professional healthcare regulators as soon as possible.

This could be undertaken through development and implementation of the principles within the draft Bill proposed by the Law Commission. We need ‘Better legislation for better regulation’

In January 2015 we published a joint statement alongside representatives of patients’ groups, nursing and midwifery professional bodies, unions, and systems and education representatives in calling on political leaders to commit to bringing forward a bill reforming health care regulation.

We were deeply disappointed at the lack of a Bill in the 2015 Queen's speech

We have produced a more detailed briefing on the importance of a Bill modernising health professional regulation
