Sally Ashton-May

Lead Midwife, Health Education England, East of England and National Team

Sally began her career as a nurse working in paediatrics , becoming a midwife in 1991. She is an experienced senior NHS leader who has worked in a variety of clinical and leadership roles across women's and children's services including Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology in a large London Trust.

Sally diversified to become the national risk and litigation manager for NHS Direct in 2007 before moving to the East of England SHA in 2008 latterly Health Education England where she led a number of local and regional programmes of work across a range of disciplines, including nursing, midwifery, health visiting and paramedics. In 2015 she took up the role of local office lead for the Trainee Nursing Associate Programme and was appointed as Regional Associate Clinical Lead in 2018.

Sally supported the National HEE Maternity Programme as the senior midwife leading on the development of the Registered Midwife Degree Apprenticeship, NMC Future Midwife and development of the Maternity Support worker and was appointed as Health Education England’s first Lead Midwife in June 2020 where this work continues.
