Maxine Spencer

Director of Midwifery and Nursing at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust

Maxine SpencerMaxine is an experienced midwife and nurse with almost 40 years’ experience of working in the NHS. Prior to having senior midwifery leadership roles ,Maxine worked for 17 years in a variety of clinical midwifery roles.

Since 2005, Maxine has held a number of senior midwifery leadership positions. These roles include Deputy Head of Midwifery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Head of Midwifery at Taunton and Somerset NHS Trust, Director of Midwifery at Kings College Hospital and her current role as Director of Midwifery and Nursing at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust in London. 

Having the opportunity to work in NHS Trusts in different areas in England has enabled Maxine to develop a deep understanding of how maternity services can meet the needs of their local populations whilst working to implement national policy and maternity safety improvement programmes.

A passionate advocate for women and midwives, Maxine believes her role of as a senior midwifery leader is to positively influence professional midwifery practice to ensure optimal outcomes for mothers and their babies.
