Standards for pre-registration midwifery education

Pre-registration midwifery education

Standards for pre-registration midwifery education publication coverWe review and maintain standards for midwifery education and practice.

The Standards for pre-registration midwifery education must be met by all midwifery students on our approved programmes before registration. This makes sure midwives are fit to practise at the point of registration.

They were published in February 2009 and replace the Standards of proficiency for pre-registration midwifery education published in 2004. The revised title reflects the scope of the standards and guidance for pre-registration midwifery education.

This edition includes European directives, along with our standards and guidance that relate to the outcome of two consultations: Fitness for practice at the point of registration, and Pre-registration midwifery education. We’ve also included the essential skills clusters for midwifery education.
